We have some tips to help you ease into after school care, particularly if the parent asks you to supervise homework time.

  1. First – if parents are okay with it, give kids time to unwind before switching gears to do homework. Of course, the last thing kids want to do at the end of the school day is sit down and do homework and it’s good for kids to burn off steam before they sit down to work, so encourage them to run around for a bit and get in a good play session before settling back into schoolwork. Having a break is also a good time for a snack!

  2. Keep to their current routine - Keep the lines of communication open with the parents to learn what their usual homework routine is and how you can help them stick to it. Homework time doesn’t have to be filled with stress for sitters or kids. And be sure to create a productive environment by keeping distractions to a minimum – like tv and loud music.

  3. Encourage independence - It’s great to provide guidance when questions come up as kids work through homework problems, but also be sure to allow the freedom for them to get their work done alone.

We hope these tips will help you be on the road to supervising happy, productive study sessions that leave everyone feeling accomplished!
